Happy Potter Day!

*WARNING-MAJOR HARRY POTTER SPOILERS BELOW*

A year ago today I was staying up through the wee hours of the night reading one of my all time favorite books. I remember how I got to the bookstore at three o’clock in the afternoon (Barnes and Noble) and waited (third in line!) with my friends who got there an hour or so after me. Some of my fondest memories of the days before Deathly Hallows were talking about various theories, debating about whether Snape was good or evil (I always thought good :D) and basically just gushing about how much we loves the books. I ended up being number 10 in line once all was said and done (contest peoples, etc. go before those who wait in line) and I remember being at the front of the line: my friend Chara’s sound proof headphones blasting in my ears so I couldn’t possibly hear any spoilers. I remember paying for four copies of DH’s with exact change and membership discount of course, and running out of the store with an ecstatic whoop of glee. This was after hugging and/or kissing the highly anticipated book. I’m not quite sure- that part is a blur! I remember waiting outside for Nikki’s Dad to pick four of us girls up (Olivia, Chara, Nikki, and myself) to go to her house for an all night reading party. Olivia was only halfway through Sorcerer’s Stone at the time but she was still quite into the spirit of things!). We first started out reading one chapter at a time at the same speed so we could savor it together; but found that this simply wasn’t working so we gave up on that ideal.I also remember how Olivia and Chara fell asleep at about three in the morning, leaving Nikki and I to our desperate pursuit of all things related to the Deathly Hallows. Gasping out loud at every turn, and nearly screaming with delight at others were not a rarity that night. At about five that morning Nikki and I ran outside (literally) for about ten minutes just to vent our overwhelming excitement. I believe we were at about the same part, where Xenophilius Lovegood is asking Harry if he is “perhaps referring to The Deathly Hallows?” I remember anxiously returning to the book, and not stopping it seems for air until at last, at approximately 11:35 AM July 21st, 2007 I finished the final installment in the Harry Potter series. I am apparently a faster reader than a few of my friends and so I finished first. When I was reading a chapter or two ahead they finally had to send me down the basement so I would stop “spoiling” (in quotes because nothing was ever actually identified as to why I was screaming, etc.) it for them. I remember writing the e-mails asking people what they thought of it. I remember talking about it for weeks afterwards. I remember how thirty minutes after my Dad picked me up from Nikki’s house I was sitting in the parking lot of one of the local shopping districts holding my books out in front of my, sitting in the front seat of the car so the whole world starring at me could see. I remember this, and much more.

That was July 21st, 2007.

A year later I can still safely say I remain as in awe of J.K. Rowlings genius for creating the story and ending it with a bang. I appreciate the art value and truth that can be found in the series (by which I am by no means referring to the magic, but the character, etc.) and I love the books every inch as much as I did then. I may not talk about them as much with friends any more but I certainly remember the theories! “Harry, I am your Father!”

Finally I remember the bonding it created between my brother and I as I started reading the first book aloud to him one day in December, and continued it to the final sentence of Deathly Hallows, “All was well.” I will definitely remember that this is when I first discovered I loved to read stories aloud: when I made my brother cry in Chapter 34 The Forest Again. Amazing. That’s all I can say.

I don’t plan on spending the whole day reading the book again (or night I should say) but I do intend on having fun with friends. Can anyone say theme park? Hope you all have a marvelous Potter Day!

This is me clicking on random archives of yours and looking at old posts.

I started in 03 or something and was totally hooked. I’m still in awe of her genius, too.

    I can only dream. 😦
